How to Travel to Pelling

Travel to Pelling is a lifetime experience when it comes to tourism. Pelling is a gleaming diamond of Sikkim and is a not to miss holiday destination. It is a lovely town recognized for its wonderful Sikkim tourism attractions. At an elevation of 2,150 meters, it offers breathtaking views of the gigantic Kanchenjunga, the world’s third tallest peak, and the fabled Himalayas.

Greenery, beautiful Buddhist temples, and the ruins of the 17th-century Rabdentse Palace are among Pelling’s other prominent attractions. This picturesque hamlet also serves as the starting point for numerous exciting excursions. Pelling’s surrounds are covered with alpine greenery and include multiple waterfalls. Pelling is occasionally blanketed in snow throughout the winter, which adds to its appeal. Pelling falls under the west district of Sikkim. West Sikkim is full of holiday destinations. Numerous tourist spots are there and will surely take over a month to visit all of them.

Travel to Pelling by Air

Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal, about 160 kilometers away, is the closest airport to Pelling. This airport provides regular flights to and from numerous major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. You may take a private cab from the airport to Pelling. There are also shared cabs available.

Pelling is 131 kilometers from Gangtok, and the most easiest way to get there is to fly to Gangtok and then drive down to Pelling. Gangtok is around 125 kilometers from Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal.

The good news is that Sikkim now has its own airport, Pakyong Airport, which will connect it directly to India’s major cities. The airport is located in Pakyong hamlet, some 35 kilometers south of Gangtok. It is Sikkim’s first airport, located at an elevation of 4,590 feet, and is one of India’s highest altitude airports. The Pakyong Greenfield airport is the closest airport or the only airport of Sikkim. The frequency of flights are very thin though one can try his luck for sure. We however recommend Bagdogra airport for comfort and flexibility in travel.

Travel to Pelling by Train

Pelling is served by the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in Siliguri, West Bengal. It is approximately 136 kilometers from Pelling. The railway station has direct connections to major Indian cities such as Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi. At the airport, private cabs are available. Head to Siliguri, which is 6 kilometers distant, for shared taxis. You may get a helicopter service if you want to have a birds eye view of the area.

Travel to Pelling by Road

The Travel to Pelling is fairly a good trip. All of the major cities and towns in the Sikkim area are easily accessible by road from Pelling. Pelling has good connections to cities such as Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Gangtok. The road from Siliguri to Pelling is rather hilly, thus hiring a private cab rather than taking public transportation such as a bus is recommended. There are also shared cabs available. Pelling can be reached using roads via Jorethang, Legshep, Ravongla and then to Pelling. The road is the heaven to an eye. Once cannot miss the opportunity to travel those hilly mountain roads passing through numerous waterfalls.  Shared Cab as well as the fully booked private Taxis are available from Bagdogra Airport as well as the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station.

The road to Pelling after entering Sikkim is a majestic one. The slowly ascending slope of the hilly terrain consists of many waterfalls. The foggy weather adds up to it. The lush green vegetation and moist weather will all get you fresh and rejuvenating. The temperature slowly decreases and reaches to its bare minimum when you reach Pelling. The place is quite cold and you may want to pack up some extra sweaters.
